The massacre, which took place on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, is widely regarded as one of the most tragic chapters in India’s colonial history. Hundreds of unarmed civilians had assembled at the site when British troops, under the command of Reginald Dyer, opened fire without warning, leading to heavy casualties.
The incident triggered widespread outrage and marked a decisive moment in India’s freedom struggle, galvanising resistance against British rule. More than a century later, leaders across the political spectrum continue to observe the day, paying homage to the martyrs whose sacrifice remains deeply embedded in the nation’s collective memory.
